Georgia: Horse Drive from Kakheti to Tusheti

Tbilisi
The migration of herds is a still-living local tradition. It usually begins in early May to reach the mountains before the tourists arrive. Tusheti is undoubtedly the wildest, yet culturally most authentic region of the Georgian Caucasus. Besides the extraordinary diversity of nature, protected by a national park, the culture of the proud highlanders has been preserved here, who still live with their horses, cherish old traditions, and serve delicious local food.

Georgia is a country with a history stretching back thousands of years, situated on the geographical and cultural border between Europe and Asia. Beautiful mountain landscapes, a commitment to tradition, exceptional hospitality, exquisite cuisine, and a long history of winemaking are just some of the reasons why this country is worth visiting.

The  migration of herds in spring and autumn is a still-living local tradition.

The route of our tour in spring is divided into several stages. On the first day, we head to Kakheti, where we’ll meet our horses and head out into the countryside for a few hours. The route is varied and serves primarily as a warm-up before the long journey of the following days. The next day, we take over the herd and lead them through the villages and meadows of Kakheti, where the horses are usually very active. This day, we cover the longest stretch, all the way to the Abano Pass (2,850 meters above sea level), and then descend to the first bridge beyond. The following day, we take a more relaxed route and reach the main village, Omalo, where we take the horses to a meadow for a rest and spend the night at a family guesthouse. The following day, we split the herd and take the mares and foals to the higher elevations with stunning views of the entire region. The fifth day in the saddle will be spent exploring the most beautiful corners of Tusheti – the Pirikiti Valley, with its fortified village of Dartlo and the Kvavlo fortress. After 5 days in the saddle, we return to the capital, where we’ll have time for shopping, thermal baths, and a gala farewell dinner. In autumn we are going back.

This tour offers an experience of the annual herd migrations and the adventure of a lifetime, as well as a deeper dive into the local horse-riding culture.

Day 2. Tbilisi –  Sighnaghi – Alazani Valley. No riding

After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll travel to Sighnaghi, known as the city of love, which is spectacularly situated above the Alazani Valley. From there, we’ll head to the Telavi bazaar, where we’ll buy some supplies for the journey into the mountains. Along the way, we’ll also see Alaverdi Cathedral. In the afternoon, we’ll reach Lower Alvani, where we’ll see our horses in a meadow and invite you to dinner with our Tusheti friends.

Day 3. Pre-ride in Caucasian saddles

After breakfast, we’ll return to our horses. A 3-4-hour field trip to get to know the horses, ride in Caucasian saddles, and warm up a bit before another long day.

Day 4.  Abano Pass

After an early breakfast, we’ll head back to our horses and, with the entire herd, set off, first along the road through villages and then increasingly higher into the mountains. There will be time for lunch along the way. This day, we’ll cross the Abano Pass, where there may still be a fair amount of snow, and clouds sometimes settle on the ridge. We plan to spend the night at a camp near a river, still high in the mountains.

Day 5. Omalo

After breakfast, we’ll saddle up and continue our journey. In the afternoon, we’ll arrive in Lower Omalo, where we’ll rest, enjoy a hot shower, and enjoy good food. We’ll stay overnight at a guesthouse in Omalo.

Day 6. Ghele Pass and Dochu

After breakfast, we’ll gather our horses and head for the Ghele Pass and then the highest part of the Makratela Range, where we’ll rest and enjoy lunch with a view of the entire region. We’ll leave the herd on the ridge and head for the village of Dochu. Depending on time and weather, we might see another village along the way. Return to Omalo for the evening and overnight.

Day 7. Sights and gallops

After breakfast, weather permitting, we’ll head to one of the nearby valleys to see springtime Tusheti and the villages where people are just returning in the spring. A day of sightseeing and galloping.

Day 8. Gombor Mountains and thermal baths

After breakfast, we’ll leave the mountains for the Alazan Valley, stopping for lunch along the way. We’ll reach Tbilisi via the Gombor Mountains, where, after checking in, we’ll take a stroll through the city, relax in the thermal baths (optional), and in the evening, we’ll invite you to a gala dinner with a performance of regional Georgian dances. Autumn migration:

The route of our tour is divided into several stages. Upon reaching Tusheti, we’ll spend the first day on horseback exploring parts of the region and observing preparations for leaving the mountains for the winter. This day we’ll also get to know our horses better on easier trails. The next day is a trip into the mountains to retrieve the herd, which needs to be brought to the main village of Omalo. During this time, we’ll stay in a family guesthouse with access to comfortable rooms, hot water, and home-cooked food. The next day, we’ll set off with the herd into the mountains, transporting our luggage by car. At the camp, we’ll sleep in tents and have a field kitchen, preparing meals together. After crossing the pass, our next overnight stay is in the warmer Kakheti.

Day 1. Arrival

Flight to Tbilisi. Hotel check-in is possible from 4:00 PM.

Day 2. Off-road to Tusheti

After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll head to Telavi, where we’ll buy supplies for a picnic at the city bazaar on our way to the mountains. We’ll then take the spectacularly beautiful road to Tusheti, crossing a pass at almost 3,000 meters above sea level in off-road vehicles. We’ll reach Tusheti in the late afternoon. A friendly family will host us for dinner and overnight at a guesthouse in Omalo.

Day 3. Shenako and Diklo

After breakfast, we’ll head to our horses and then head into the mountains to Shenako and Diklo. We’ll do some galloping and test our horses’ abilities. Lunch in Diklo, and then drive to Diklo Fortress, the furthest point from the border with Dagestan. In the afternoon, we’ll return to Omalo, where we’ll stay overnight. If it rains and the road is wet, an alternative route is to Dartlo and Kvavlo.

Day 4.  Ghele Pass and Makratela Mountains

After an early breakfast, we saddle up our horses and depart for the Ghele Pass. From there, we’ll head to the Makratela Mountains in search of our herd of horses, which we need to bring to Omalo. If we find the herd quickly, we’ll bring them to Omalo, then we’ll take a short drive around the area or stop off at Dochu along the way. It all depends on whether the herd is scattered and where we find them to round up. We’ll stay overnight at a guesthouse in Omalo.

Day 5.  Omalo

After breakfast, we’ll pack our bags and set off to find the herd at the lower meadow in Omalo. From there, we’ll lead the horses down from the plateau to the road toward the pass. We’ll be leading about 50 horses, including several foals. We’ll have lunch along the way and stop for the night at the last bridge. First, we’ll take care of the herd, then we’ll set up camp together and prepare dinner. Weather permitting, we’ll spend the night by the fire. This is our coldest night yet.

Day 6. Abano Pass to Kakheti

After an early breakfast, we load our luggage into the car and prepare the horses for the journey. It’s quite a long day in the saddle, starting with an ascent to the Abano Pass (2,850 m), which may already be partially covered in snow, and then descending to Kakheti via serpentine roads. We’ll stop for the night in a meadow in Kakheti after descending the mountains. In case of bad weather, we’ll have breakfast in a shelter on the pass.

Day 7. Lower Alvani

After breakfast and packing up camp, we’ll continue our journey through the meadows and villages of Kakheti. The weather will be getting warmer. We’ll leave our herd in a meadow near Lower Alvani. We’ll head to a family guesthouse for a rest, and in the evening, we’ll invite you to a ceremonial supra with the entire team.

Day 8. Alazan Valley, Alaverdi Cathedral

After breakfast, we depart the Alazan Valley, visiting the Alaverdi Cathedral and vineyards. We reach Tbilisi through the Gombor Mountains, where after checking in, we’ll take a stroll around the city, relax in the thermal baths (optional), and in the evening, we’ll invite you to a gala dinner with a regional Georgian dance show. Overnight stay at a hotel in Tbilisi.

Day 9. Departure

Departure to the airport at 2:30 AM (Tbilisi) or 6:00 AM (Kutaisi)

Important:

– The route is designed for intermediate and advanced participants who have good riding skills in three gaits, balance in the saddle, and horse control.

– Each day, the route includes areas with significant exposure, steep descents and ascents. This is not a place for those with a fear of heights or heights. Our horses handle this exceptionally well, but it may be too much for some riders. Good balance on the horse is required.

– Good physical condition is required to ride this route – we bring the horses downhill on steep slopes (often several hundred meters high). Before the tour, we also recommend warming them up to ensure they are in good shape for riding 4-7 hours a day in various terrain conditions. Good mobility in the saddle is required – a good seat, and the ability to lie comfortably along the horse’s neck if you encounter a tree along the way that needs to be cleared.

– Our horses are strong, but not the tallest. They are a local Caucasian breed and a few Tusheti horses. They weigh approximately 145-150 kg at the withers. There is a weight limit of 80 kg for smaller horses and 85 kg for slightly larger ones, of which we have three.
