By picking this tour you can witness an awe-inspiring glacier, ride on multiple beaches and through ancient lava fields, on top of spectacularly tall and beautiful ocean cliffs, over waterfalls and rivers, across fields of green and rugged mountain passes, through an ocean of lupine flowers and rough rocky terrain.
On this tour we will ride both slow and fast as the terrain changes dramatically each day. For the first four days of the trip we travel along Snæfellsnes southern coast, where we will spend a part of each day on beaches. These beaches form some of the worlds greatest riding terrain as their sand, which is high in clay content is arguably the perfect ground for riding on. There we can ride for hours on the famous smooth gait Tölt and the horses can really show their worth running free without any obstacles to slow them down. The fifth day is spend traversing across a long mountain pass all the way to the north side of the peninsula and on the sixth and final day, we take the time to ride around the area of Helgafellssveit.
They say Snæfellsnes Peninsula is like small Iceland.
There are 2 types of accommodation to choose from on this tour.
At Holy Ram Lodge we have both double and twin rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. Each room has a great view and a skylight above the bed. Here we have a cozy common room with a bar and a comfortable seating area. After a long and exciting day in the saddle, it is nice to come home and relax with a book or a movie, treat yourself to a freshly tapped beer and chat with other riders on the cozy sofas. Outside there is a great outdoor area with a hot tub and sauna with incredible views of the sea, mountains and glacier. After an exciting day we can relax in the hot tub under the midnight sun or the starry sky while in the distance the sea fights with the coast. With a bit of luck we can even see the Northern Lights while lying in the warm water.
The farmhouse offers a little less comfort than the Holy Ram Lodge, but still places great value on coziness and a feel-good atmosphere. The house is located on the highest point of the farm and the view of the sea and the surrounding area is simply incomparable. In addition to the double rooms, the farmhouse also has a spacious living room and a small fireplace room. Here we can relax after a long day of riding, read a book or watch a film and make ourselves a hot tea in the kitchen before we fall into our cozy beds. There are two modern shared bathrooms in the farmhouse.
The accommodation is fully equipped with towels and bed linen.
Day 1:
Pick up at BSÍ Reykjavík at 2 p.m. After about 2.5 hours of transfer time to Gröf, we take a short break and move into our rooms. In the evening we meet the horses and go on a short ride of about an hour and a half on the farm’s private beach to get to know our four-legged friends. Afterwards we have the opportunity to chat with the other participants over a sumptuous dinner, make ourselves comfortable on the couches and maybe even drink a freshly tapped beer at the farm’s own bar.
Day 2:
Today we ride from Gröf towards Arnastapi on one of the most spectacular riding trails in Iceland, which is still largely unknown. We follow the cliffs that run along the beach and cross several small waterfalls. Immediately to our right is the foot of the Snæfellsjökull glacier, while to our left we can enjoy the view over the North Atlantic. In Arnastapi, the smooth gravel roads finally invite us to go faster. Leaving the fishing village behind us, we follow the old highway back towards the farm, where we end the evening after about 4-5 hours on horseback.
Day 3:
Now the actual tour begins. We set off towards the world-famous Löngufjörur beaches. Along meadows and fields, we approach the first highlight and stop of today’s route at a brisk pace: a viewpoint that gives us an overview of the entire Hraunlandarif Bay. We continue on the old highway until we reach Búðir. Here we cross the large creek, which forms the entrance to the beach. From now on we ride further and further eastwards at a fast pace until we reach our final destination for today, Langaholt. The horses will wait for us here tomorrow morning while we take the bus back to Gröf to recover from the approximately 5-hour ride.
Day 4:
From Langaholt we pursue the same goal as yesterday: to ride further eastwards along the 60km long chain of beaches. The Löngufjörur beaches are known for their high clay content in the sand, which makes it firmer and practically invites you to fast gallops and long tölt stretches. With the wind in our hair and sea salt on our skin, we reach our destination for the day, Gaul, after about 5 hours in the saddle. The four-legged friends stay here for the night while we return to Gröf.
Day 5: Today we leave the long sandy beaches and ride north. Now we have to cross a mountain range. We follow the old postal route and see a breathtaking backdrop. We ride along lakes and streams surrounded by red lava rock. Red volcanic craters tower in front of us. We leave them behind us and dive into an almost endless sea of lupins (mostly bloom from mid-June to early August). After almost 6 hours in the saddle, we can now see our destination for the day on the horizon, the Staðarbakki farm. The horses can stay here tonight while we are driven back to Gröf.
Day 6: We climb into the saddles of our faithful companions one last time to explore the varied surroundings in Helgafellsveit. The well-paved gravel paths are perfect for tölting. We cross rivers and lava fields, always with a view of the beautiful Breiðafjörður fjord. After about 4 hours we return to Staðarbakki. Our beloved four-legged friends now have a whole week to regenerate. We, on the other hand, drive back to Gröf to have dinner with our fellow riders and maybe even celebrate a little at the bar.
7th day: The day of departure. We all have breakfast together again before we arrive at the BSÍ in Reykjavik by bus at 2 p.m.
Even though the tour is a round-trip, and the horses stay in a field where we have stopped for the night, you’ll return each evening back to the farm where you can enjoy a time of relaxation and great food.
We also provide riding helmets and rain gear. For the greater comfort of our guests, however, we recommend bringing your own (disinfected) riding helmets, warm and waterproof clothing, new riding gloves (see import regulations for riding clothes) and calf-high rubber boots. The tour is suitable for people with good riding experience and good physical shape.
