Georgia is a country with a history dating back several thousand years, located on the geographical and cultural border between Europe and Asia. Beautiful mountain landscapes, attachment to tradition, extraordinary hospitality of the inhabitants, excellent cuisine and a long history of winemaking are just some of the reasons why this country is worth visiting.
The route of our rally will lead through the ridge tops, steep valleys and mountain roads of beautiful, wild Tushetia, where many authentic traditions have been preserved. It will also be a journey through a region of unique nature, space, with encounters with local people, a look at their lives, the work of the shepherds and a taste of the local Tusheti cuisine.
The route is very varied, with considerable exposure, crossing mountain streams (June-July quite cold and with higher water levels), forests full of raspberries and blueberries, ridge tops where flocks of sheep and horses graze.
Each day offers a different landscape and degree of difficulty. The route has been designed to provide a bit of adrenaline, while safely crossing the high mountains. The rally is designed for intermediate to advanced riders who are comfortable with three gaits and have no problem jumping onto something a little higher or jumping off on their horse. You will also need a bit of fitness, both in the saddle for 6 days of riding most of the day and when bringing the horses down on the steeper sections. Many parts of the route are quite exposed, so those with a fear of heights or space may feel uncomfortable in some places. Our horses have no problem with the altitude or exposure. Tushetia is a high mountain range with numerous highlands. There
are no great spaces for gallops, but they are found on the high plateaus and on some parts of the road, so as to spread the horses’ energy over a longer route.

3* hotel in Tbilisi, family guesthouses in Tusheti (bedding, towels, hot water everywhere. Not everywhere has wifi

Day 1. Arrival.

Transfer to Tbilisi. Possible hotel accommodation from
16.00.

Day 2. Tbilisi – Tevali – Omalo. No riding.

After breakfast at the hotel, we will head to Telavi, where we will purchase products at the town bazaar for a picnic on our way into the mountains. We will then make our way along the spectacularly beautiful road to Tusheti crossing the pass at almost 3,000 m. We will arrive in Tusheti in the late afternoon. We will be hosted for dinner and overnight by a friendly family at a guesthouse in Omalo.

Day 3. Shenako – Diklo

After breakfast, we pack our luggage and leave it at the guesthouse, to be picked up by car. We go to the military unit to get a pass to enter the border area, and then down a mountain road through the forest to the river, and from there we climb to the village of Shenako, where we will rest for a while. From there we will drive through a meadow to Diklo, where we will have lunch and a moment’s rest. In the afternoon we will go on horseback to Old Diklo, where a fortress once existed. It was conquered by the Dagestanians in the past, and the inhabitants fled deep into the valley and founded New Diklo. From there, we will return to Diklo, where we will have a feast and rest at a family guesthouse.

Day 4.  Diklo – Chigho – Dartlo medieval village

This day’s route is via a less popular trail running down the mountainside to the next valley. We take the trail from Diklo to the shepherd’s settlement on the pass, and from there bring the horses through the forest down a fairly steep slope to a bridge, by the river. The road continues through the forest and then across the pastures to the village of Chigho, where only a few people live in summer. There we stop for lunch. The next part follows the mountain road along the valley to the beautiful restored medieval village of Dartlo. We will stay for the night in traditional fortified stone houses and dinner will be waiting for us on a terrace by the river.

Day 5. Gomecari Valley – Ghele Pass – Saheo Peak – Djwarboseli village

After breakfast, we pack our luggage, which will continue by off-road vehicle, while we head on horseback to our final destination in the Gomecari Valley. The route partly follows a paved mountain road sheltered by forest. Then, after reaching the Ghele Pass, we climb a higher ridge to ride through high mountain meadows to the highest point in the centre of the region – Saheo Peak. From there we will bring the horses down to the river to reach the beautifully situated village of Djwarboseli. There, a rest and a real feast awaits us.

Day 6. Gogrulta and gallops

After breakfast, packing and saddling the horses, we set off along the valley to climb another ridge and reach the village of Gogrulta. We will have some time to play in the meadow above Gogrulta, before relaxing at a guesthouse in the spectacularly located village. A slightly shorter day, but with the possibility of a faster ride.

Day 7. River crossing and Shtrolta village

After an early breakfast, we pack our luggage and saddle our horses. A long and very spectacular route awaits us this day, which we will start by bringing our horses to the river and crossing it. We will follow a shepherd’s trail and will also visit a shepherd’s
farm along the way. Then we will face a rather demanding climb to the ridge of the next mountain, from where we will enjoy a view of Tushetia that will always remain in our memory. We will ride along the ridge and finally bring the horses to a small village – Shtrolta. There we will stay overnight at a traditional shepherd’s house.

Day 8. Lake Oreti with a  view of Omalo

After breakfast, we pack our luggage and leave it at the guesthouse, to be picked up by car. We bring the horses to the village of Chala and cross the river there. A little higher up in the village of Khiso we visit our friendly shepherd and continue on to the
ridge. Initially through the forest and then through high mountain meadows we will reach the glacial lake Oreti with a stunning view of Omalo and the mountains. After lunch and a rest, we will bring the horses through the forest (abundant with wild strawberries and blueberries) and then along the mountain road and trail we will reach Omalo. Here we will say goodbye to our brave steeds. A traditional ‘supra’ with toasts with the whole team awaits us at the family guesthouse.

Day 9. Keselo Fortress, Gomecari Valley and Alazan Valley. Wine tasting. No riding.

After breakfast, we will head to Upper Omalo to bid farewell to Tushetia from Keselo Fortress overlooking the Gomecari Valley and the mountains around. We will then set off through the mountains back to the Abano Pass and from there to the Alazan Valley. We will stop at a local winery for lunch, and from there we will head to Tbilisi. We will have a few free hours to buy souvenirs or go to the thermal baths. Everyone will have the moment of relaxation they wish. Towards the evening we will invite you to a farewell dinner, accompanied by a show of regional Georgian dances. Overnight at a hotel in Tbilisi.

Day 10.  Goodbye

Departure from Georgia in the early morning.

Important:

The route can be modified based on weather conditions and paths conditions.

On the route each day we have places with considerable exposure, steep descents and ascents. This is not a place for those with a fear of space and heights. Our horses do well here, but it may be too much for some riders. Good balance on the horse is required.

A good physical condition is required to ride this route – on the steeps we bring the horses down from the mountain (often
several hundred metres in altitude), and before the rally we also recommend that you ‘stretch out’ so that you are in shape
to ride 4-7 hours a day in various terrain conditions. Good mobility in the saddle is required – saddle up, free position
along the horse’s neck if a tree is found on the way under which you have to pass.

Our horses are strong, but not the tallest. They are a local Caucasian breed and a couple of Tuskegee horses. They are about 145-150 cm at the withers. There is a weight limit of 80 kg for the smaller horses and 85 kg for the slightly larger ones.
